I was working with a group not too long ago on some team issues (ok, we were dealing with how to handle conflict successfully - because they weren't) and someone asked me if I could bottom line "this whole team-thing". I said sure, there's no "I" in team, but there are two in "idiot". Now clearly I didn't mean that that person was an idiot, he's not. |

It’s easy to believe that co-operating with other people, other teams, and other organizations is a great way to build success in whatever form you might define that. But when you look at it, there’s a naiveté that just can’t be ignored. Companies and business leaders at all levels are especially susceptible to this one. How many times have you heard “we need to communicate better and work together better and then we’ll achieve….” whatever it is someone wants to achieve? Everybody talks "team" but it's surprising how many people don't really get how it works. There's invariably a conversation about synergy and even this is normally misunderstood. The good news is that when you understand both, there's an awful lot that you can make happen. Check out this article I wrote for Choice magazine for more.
